$38.91 AUD

🛡️ Design Description
This t-shirt proudly showcases the kamon of the Nanbu clan (南部氏), featuring two elegant cranes facing each other – a design known as 向かい立ち鶴 (Mukaitachi-zuru). Encased in a bold circle, the motif symbolizes longevity, loyalty, and peace, reflecting the noble spirit of the Nanbu samurai who ruled Japan’s northern territories for centuries.

🏯 Cultural Note
The Nanbu clan (南部氏) originated from Kai Province but rose to prominence in northern Japan, ruling the Morioka Domain in Mutsu Province. Known for their resilience in harsh northern climates and loyalty to the Tokugawa shogunate, they maintained stability in Tōhoku during the Edo period.

A notable figure, Nanbu Toshinao (南部利直), was a respected early Edo daimyō who contributed to the infrastructure and prosperity of Morioka. The clan fought in major conflicts like the Battle of Sekigahara (1600) on the Tokugawa side and later played a role in the Boshin War (1868–1869), supporting the shogunate during its final days.

The Mukaitachi-zuru crest is strongly associated with the Nanbu family, though crane motifs (tsuru mon) were also used by other clans in varied forms. This facing-crane design, however, is distinctive to Nanbu's official heraldry.
