🛡️ Design Description
This T-shirt features the kamon (family crest) of the Toyotomi clan, known as the Paulownia Crest (Kiri-mon). The design shows five-three paulownia leaves (Gosan-no-kiri / 五三の桐), a symbol long associated with imperial authority and later adopted by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the second of Japan’s “Three Great Unifiers.”
Toyotomi Hideyoshi rose from peasant origins to become Kampaku (Imperial Regent) and effectively ruled Japan after Oda Nobunaga's death. His sharp mind and political genius earned him the nickname “The Monkey” (Saru / 猿) from Nobunaga himself, though he would later be revered as a demigod of unification.
The paulownia crest he adopted had originally been used by the imperial court and the Ashikaga shogunate. It became a symbol of ambition, imperial favor, and the right to rule. Today, a similar version of the crest is still used by the Japanese government.
