The Yagyū clan (柳生氏), originating in Yamato Province, is best known for producing Japan’s most respected sword instructors. Yagyū Munenori (柳生宗矩) served as kenjutsu instructor and political advisor to the Tokugawa shoguns, founding the renowned Yagyū Shinkage-ryū (柳生新陰流) school.
Unlike many samurai families who used bold and martial crests, the Yagyū adopted the subtle and botanical “Sparrow in Burnet” mon — a unique emblem that reflected their philosophical and spiritual approach to combat. It embodies restraint, strategy, and the ability to move silently yet decisively.
This kamon is exclusive to the Yagyū lineage, and rarely found outside their family. Its quiet strength has become a symbol of refined martial legacy.
