🏯 Cultural Note
The Maeda clan (前田氏) rose to prominence during the Sengoku period under Maeda Toshiie (前田利家), a loyal general under Oda Nobunaga and later Toyotomi Hideyoshi. After the Battle of Sekigahara (1600), the clan was confirmed as rulers of the Kaga Domain, spanning the provinces of Kaga, Noto, and Etchū.
The domain became known as "Kaga Hyakumangoku" (加賀百万石) – referring to its massive rice yield and wealth, making Maeda the most powerful tozama daimyo under Tokugawa rule. Despite their outsider status, the Maeda clan maintained peace and fostered arts and culture in Kanazawa.
While umebachi crests were used by other families (including Sugawara clan), this Kaga-style bold blossom with thick petals became synonymous with the Maeda legacy.
前田氏は、織田信長や豊臣秀吉に仕えた前田利家の活躍により戦国時代に頭角を現しました。関ヶ原の戦いの後は、加賀・能登・越中の三国にまたがる加賀藩を治め、「加賀百万石」としてその富と権力を誇りました。
