The Murakami clan was a powerful confederation of sea lords known collectively as the Murakami Suigun (村上海賊) – naval warriors who ruled key maritime routes during the Sengoku period. Divided into three main branches (Noshima, Innoshima, and Kurushima), they controlled shipping lanes, levied tolls, and fought in both land and sea battles. Their most famous leader, Murakami Takeyoshi (村上武吉), fiercely opposed Oda Nobunaga and later joined forces with the Mōri clan against Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
Renowned for their naval engineering and pirate-like tactics, the Murakami were both feared and respected. Their wave crest became a symbol of mastery over the sea and coastal authority.
