🏯 Cultural Note
The Makino clan (牧野氏) served loyally under the Tokugawa regime and governed domains such as Nagaoka (Echigo Province). During the Boshin War, Makino Tadayuki (牧野忠恭) worked tirelessly as a mediator between the Tokugawa shogunate and Imperial forces, earning respect for his diplomacy in a turbulent era. Another notable descendant, Makino Nobuaki (牧野伸顕), became one of Japan’s key modern diplomats and a close advisor to the emperor in the Meiji and Taishō periods.
While oak-leaf motifs (kashiwa mon) were used by several families during the Edo period, this exact version – Maru-ni Mitsu-Gashiwa – is distinctively associated with the Makino clan.
牧野氏は、徳川幕府の忠実な譜代大名として長岡（越後国）などを治めました。戊辰戦争では牧野忠恭が幕府と新政府軍の間の調停役として尽力し、その外交手腕は高く評価されました。また、子孫の牧野伸顕は明治・大正時代において外交官・内大臣として活躍し、天皇の側近として近代日本の政策形成に影響を与えました。
柏紋は江戸時代に多くの家系で使用されましたが、この「丸に三つ柏」は牧野氏に特有の意匠です。
