Cultural Note: The Mochizuki clan name literally translates to "full moon" (望 - full moon, 月 - moon). They were the most prominent and powerful family within the Kōka Ikki, a confederation of independent warrior families in the Kōka region. Operating as covert agents, guerrilla fighters, and expert herbalists, the Kōka shinobi were instrumental during the turbulent Sengoku period.

One of the clan's most famous historical figures is Mochizuki Chiyome (16th century), a noblewoman of Kōka-ryū descent. Commissioned by the legendary daimyo Takeda Shingen, she created an expansive, covert army of female ninjas (kunoichi), disguising them as wandering shrine maidens (miko) to gather vital intelligence across Japan.

The Kuyōmon, representing a central star surrounded by eight celestial bodies, is an ancient astrological symbol of cosmic power. Its legacy lives on today, still visible on the roof tiles of the authentic Kōka Ninja House—the former Mochizuki estate and the last surviving shinobi mansion in Japan.

「望月」という名は文字通り「満月」（望＝満ちる、月＝月）を意味します。望月氏は、甲賀地域の独立した武士の自治組織「甲賀一揆」の中で最も有力な筆頭家でした。甲賀の忍びは諜報活動やゲリラ戦、さらには薬草の専門家として、戦国時代の動乱期に極めて重要な役割を果たしました。

同家で最も有名な歴史的人物の一人が、16世紀の甲賀流出身の女性、望月千代女（ちよめ）です。彼女は伝説的な大名・武田信玄の命を受け、歩き巫女に身をやつした女性忍者（くノ一）の巨大な地下諜報ネットワークを創設し、全国で情報収集を行いました。

中央の星とそれを囲む8つの天体を表す「九曜紋」は、宇宙の力を示す古代のシンボルです。その遺産は今も息づいており、日本に唯一現存する忍術屋敷である「甲賀流忍術屋敷」（旧望月氏本家）の瓦にも、この紋章が誇り高く刻まれています。
