🏯 Cultural Note
The Ōtani clan is remembered primarily through Ōtani Yoshitsugu (大谷吉継), a renowned Sengoku-period general and close friend of Ishida Mitsunari. Despite suffering from a debilitating illness (believed to be leprosy), Yoshitsugu remained loyal and fought bravely in the Battle of Sekigahara (1600) on the Western Army's side.
His loyalty to Mitsunari, even when it meant certain defeat, has made him a symbol of unwavering friendship and tragic heroism. According to folklore, Yoshitsugu wore a cloth to cover his disfigurement but still commanded respect with brilliant strategy and resolve.
The Maru-ni Chigai Taka-no-ha crest is also famously used by the Asano clan (浅野氏), most notably remembered for the 47 Rōnin episode. Though shared, it reflects the ideals of honor and sacrifice embodied by both houses.
大谷氏は、戦国時代の名将である大谷吉継によって広く知られています。吉継は石田三成の親友であり、重い病を患いながらも関ヶ原の戦いで西軍として奮戦しました。
敗北が確実な状況でも忠義を尽くしたその姿は、忠誠と友情の象徴として今なお語り継がれています。容姿を隠すために布をかぶって戦場に立ったという逸話も残されており、その気高さは人々の尊敬を集めました。
なお、この「丸に違い鷹の羽」の家紋は、四十七士の逸話で有名な**浅野氏（浅野家）**も使用していたことで知られています。両家に共通する「忠義」と「犠牲」の精神を象徴する家紋です。
